We're staying the first two nights in Wyoming.
Yes, Wyoming.
We are riding 1600 miles to Sturgis, passing all the way through South Dakota, and into the next state just to find some where to stay.
There are no vacancies in SD for anything resembling a reasonable about of money, and we're still 5 months out.
Can't wait.

...5 MONTHS out?!?!?

It's Aug, so yeah... we leave five months from now.
There are only 800K people in SD. Over a million come to that rally. Shit sells out fast.

I stayed in Newcastle, Wy. Small town, can get a room cheap, and only about an hour from Sturgis. Been to Sturgis 4 times. If you can spend 4 days there, you are amazing. Usually one to one and a half days is about all anybody can take. Have fun.

LOL, that's where we are spending the first few nights.

Prepare for lots and lots of Harleys. I was in SD during Sturgis in 2013. Didn't go for Sturgis, just happened that the Rapid City leg of our trip was the same week. It was interesting. Some very nice roads out by Mount Rushmore though. Enjoy when ever you do get to go, whether this or next year.

So many options. The campgrounds have shitty websites, shower houses, tents, cabins for rent (some have electricity), and slips for RVs. There are houses for rent, too.
Rapid City is a decent size city with motels, hotels, etc.. Start calling now and see what they have to say.

If you found a place, great!
We struggled a little bit finding a place for two couples. I could sleep in a tent for week, but the wives......

Wait, are you allowed to go if you're not riding a Harley?
In all seriousness, I recommend staying in Keystone and riding highway 16a at some point. It would be fun to get there a few days before everything really gets going so you could enjoy the roads a bit more without all the extra traffic. I've never been to the rally but I've been through the area quite a few times years ago. Should be fun.

Directions for me (~1100 miles):
Ride across the Nevada desert (yuck)
Ride across the Utah desert (yuck)
Ride across Wyoming (meh)
Yeah... That does not look like a fun ride.
Best of luck to you on your trip, though!

Being an uncultured American, I honestly can't. Based on ignorant stereotypes, I imagine:

Again, I'm still culturally ignorant, but from what I understand:
Detroit looks like this:
Chicago looks like this:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Iowa looks like this:
And South Dakota looks like this:
So maybe the great ice fields of Canada aren't so bad.
